9.3 The letters from TM Roberts School concerning dog owners not cleaning up after their pets caused a fair amount of discussion.  It was pointed out that with the imminent hiring of another bylaw officer, it will hopefully be possible in the future for more patrols to take place.  There is a $50 fine for people not cleaning up after their dogs.

9.5 Notice that taxi divers are asking the Province for a 1.6% increase in fares

9.7 Council approved a $1000 silver donation to Junior Chamber International Cranbrook for their upcoming convention.  This convention will take place in Kimberley and will be attended by approximately 124 people.

Comment
In light of the fact that there are many groups who mentor and enrich our community with leadership, does this mean other international or local service and business groups will be eligible for such a sum at time of convention?  It was notable that a few items later one Councillor had difficulty considering a sum for another BC wide event that will happen in Cranbrook.  At a time when we know contingency funds are limited, one wonders what criteria are used for allocation of such large sums.

  1. Council needs to draw the line on these fee waiver/contingency reserve funding agreements for folks hosting events. A blanket policy of no waivers may be tough but it means that the public will understand that there will always be more worthy events than monies available --and reasonable-sounding, creative justifications from both the public and individual councilors. Only a consistent "no" based on clear policy will stop this somewhat arbitrary approvals and amounts.

The probelm now is that a precedence is being set that will be hard to walk back. For example, JCI gets $1000 for a tournament. Why wouldn't any other group expect the same (such as the St. Mary's baseball tournament)?

There's no reason to expect the flow of public requests to stop. Will it be fair to say to some groups later in the year that the cupboard is bare because of the current ad hoc approach by Council?

  2. I Would Be Concerned TooJune 12, 2012 at 7:30 PM

I read with interest that there was a concern about sewage lagoon 2 leakage from Ft .Steele residents. Was there any discussion about how the City proposes to address this issue?
