The North Star Trail parking lot was packed on this August long weekend and it was noticeable that over half the cars displayed
Alberta license plates. This is not
surprising considering people come from miles around to ride or walk the trail and
sometimes to enjoy the many geocache finds along the way. Socially, the trail is rather like the
Farmer’s Market for most people greet you while passing in either direction.
Only those totally engrossed in their own level of fitness keep their heads
down as they speed by. For those of us
who pedal slowly, it is entertaining to watch the many chipmunks and ground
squirrels as they scurry off their prime sunning spot to get out of the way. Spotting a Bald Eagle on a tree-top by the
river gives reason to rest and rehydrate.
There is an awakening of the senses when coasting along on two wheels
for there are no gas motorized engine noises, no gas fumes and the sweet scent
of clover can infiltrate your nostrils. If lucky, you may even spot a local
celebrity on the trail as happened to me today, for while enjoying the downhill
run to the bridge a certain local thespian nonagenarian was pedaling uphill with a broad smile on his face as if
the task was effortless. Maybe the lung capacity had something to do with his trombone playing at the Farmer's Market! Inspiration
indeed.
