In just a few short weeks, Cranbrook's first public produce garden has grown substantially. Under the direction of Christian Kimber, the garden in MacKinnon park has gone from turf to rows of potatoes, radishes, beans and squash. The fence is almost complete and the veggies obviously love their sunny location. Growing potatoes is great way to start a new produce garden. Their roots penetrate deeply and break up compacted soil and by the looks of these healthy plants, a healthy crop should be harvested. Thanks go to Top Crop for donating these seed potatoes.
If you would like to volunteer in this garden and reap the rewards of your help, stop by sometime and take a peek at this great new way to garden cooperatively. There are always some weeds to be pulled or maybe new row to plant. This garden belongs to the community and anyone can participate. The Food Action Committee can be reached at 250-489-3917 or
