Sunflower Hill

Sunflower Hill is an easily accessible hike in the Kimberley Nature Park opposite the Happy Hans Campground on the St. Mary's Lake Road and a great choice for a Canada Day outing.

The lupins have taken over from the Sunflowers and there is a mass of Snowbrush or Ceonothus out right now.  This low growing shrub smells of warmed honey and flourishes after a fire.  The seeds of the shrub can lay dormant for 200 years.  Also to be found at this time are many Coral Roots which are saprophytes. Saprophytes are totally dependent on particular kinds of decaying matter on the forest floor.  They grow in a symbiotic association with soil fungi.

Other finds this week include Mariposa Lilies, Prince's Pine and Twinflowers.
