City Council Meeting Notes

Mayor Scott Manjak presented the Community Builder of the Year to the Cranbrook Farmers Market. It is a well deserved award and we are pleased that the market has been recognized for its outstanding contribution to this community.
Sioux Browning
Sioux Browning made an amusing  presentation to the council regarding the Royal Alexandra Masquerade Ball which is being held on Feb 26. The event is a fundraiser for the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel. For information about tickets please phone 250-489-3918
The Second Presentation was by the Home Run Society regarding the building of a ball park at Moir Park. The presentation was impressive with a multi phase development with the initial phase costing $4.2 million.  The ball park would eventually have 900 seats, with night lighting, and various concessions which could also hold concerts etc.  This would be the home venue for our baseball team the Cranbrook Ed's of the Western Major Baseball League. Councillors Diana J. Scott and Bob Wetham brought forward several concerns about the sustainability of such a ball park here in Cranbrook over the long term. Firstly, the City has no money to contribute to such a venture, secondly we already have a hockey team which struggles with attendance, and thirdly many people in the Summer are away camping etc.
Chris Ayling made his quarterly presentation about the work that Cranbrook Connected has undertaken to listen to the people of Cranbrook. They have undertaken several surveys as well as meeting with a wide variety of citizens. For more information about Cranbrook Connected please go to their website at http://www.cranbrookconnected.com/

Other issues discussed included the decision by the City to raise prices of transit tickets by 25 cents. Transit is a large part of the City's budget and ever increasing costs led to the raising of ticket prices.
The problems with mens showers at the Rec Plex have been fixed as of Monday.
Finally the City passed the much discussed Erosion and Sediment Bylaw.
See you at the next meeting. Remember, Its your money!
