The movie Force of Nature, The David Suzuki Story, brought to us by Sunrise Rotary was a full house last night. Thank You Sunrise Rotary for bringing this to us.
In an article by Canadian Press which quotes research from the David Suzuki Foundation and Pacific Parklands Foundation it states the benefits of Mother Nature in Metro Vancouver have a cash value of $5.4 billion annually, or about $2,462 per person, according to the report. This cash value is attributed to the filtering of air and water, combating climate change and absorption of carbon dioxide by the city’s forests, fields, wetlands and other ecosystems.
The article quotes Faisal Moola from the David Suzuki Foundation who said, "Nature provides these services for free, but the benefits can no longer be ignored. This study shows that it is time to start accounting for the economic value of nature's benefits in how we manage the growth of our towns and cities."
I'm assuming that would include aesthetic value and less measurable mental health values! When will we face the fact that endless growth is not sustainable? The 'economy' owes itself to nature, not the other way around.
