An Award from the Canadian Federation of Municipalities

Cranbrook has won a 2012 Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Sustainable Communities Award for Water on Wednesday February 8, 2012 in Ottawa.

Thank You and Congratulations to all those who have worked to see this project happen.

The award is for the long overdue and much needed upgrades to Cranbrook's Waste Water Management Program.  The program will be completed this year.

There are still some issues of concern for some area residents, including, not surprisingly residents of Fort Steele.  We have every hope however, those concerns will now be addressed in the future.  To watch a short video about the system:

  1. As a concerned citizen myself, I've read your blog off and on for a while now and it always bashes Cranbrooks waste water system....Do CLC members know something that the federal government and the team of scientists aren't aware of? It really concerns me we are receiving an award for something you have time again said is not a good system. I respect your blog and support all members but something seems terribly wrong here....

  2. Yes, in the past we have been very critical of Cranbrook's Waste Water System and were so, long before the existence of this blog. What was consistently denied by many past council members was found to be reason for real concern by authorities. We had proven cause to be concerned. Due to the Environmental Hearing, the vigilence of those who were watching carefully and asking questions, great improvements have been made and for that we are very thankful. We are very satisfied that what should have been done many years ago, now has been for the most part accomplished. Fort Steele residents still need to be reassured their wells are in no danger of being contaminated and fresh water for cattle is still somewhat of an issue. Their drinking water will continue to be effluent but it will now receive ultra-violet treatment which is vast improvement. Pharmacuticals might be need to be examined more closely.
    We are much happier now!

  3. Kudos to former Mayor Scott Manjak and Council for listening to the concerns of our community and working to address this important issue. I think we are a stronger community when we recognize the positives we achieve, undiluted by faint praise or by pointing out other issues yet to be addressed. There will always be things yet to address. Let's celebrate our successes!
