Wild Licorice

Dogs beware!  It is that time of year when pet owners need to be on the lookout for spear grass and other nuisance seed heads. Most dog owners are aware of Burdock and its nasty clumps of hooked seeds, which can get caught in pet hair and people socks. However, lurking in the area, alongside damp areas, is another nasty burr producing plant know as Wild Licorice or Glycyrrhiza lepidota. It is is only the burrs which can be a problem as the plant actually has many useful qualities, some of which are medicinal.  More information on the plant can easily be found on the web.

These photos were take on a connector trail to the TransCanada Trail just east of Cranbrook.
