Is Water a Commodity to be Sold or a Basic Human Right?
This is just one of the dilemmas addressed in the
documentary, ‘Tapped,’ to be shown at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre on
Wednesday May 9th at 7:00pm. Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook is pleased
to present this informative movie by filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig, which
tackles the topic of the big business of bottled water. The movie examines many aspects of the
industry including the path of the plastic production to the ocean where many of
these bottles end up. The lives affected by the bottled water industry are also
portrayed. The chemicals involved, the
origin of the water in the bottles, the cost of transportation are all aspects
of the industry which come into question in this eye-opening movie. According to the National Resources Defence
Council for example, it is estimated that approximately 40% of bottled water is
actually just tap water which may or not have received further treatment. Entry
to this event is by donation.
