Cycling in Calgary just received a big boost in the arm, as the City has released a comprehensive cycling strategy document. The most significant item is the desire of the City and its citizens to build dedicated bike lanes. As Calgary has increased the number of residents living in the downtown core the City hopes to increase the number of people commuting to work by bike. Not only will the City build dedicated bike lanes but they also hope to provide more places to lock up your bike and also investigate the bike share concept. World class cities such as London and Paris have both attempted to make their cities more bike friendly and both offer amazing bike share services. As Calgary matures it's good to see a City that is trying to offer people a safer alternative commuting model. More cars off the road lead to less pollution and fitter citizens. As someone who has used the bike trails extensively in Calgary over the years, it is surprising how easy it is to travel around with little contact with busy city traffic, thanks to thoughtful planning.
