Special Ceremony Marks Graves in Cranbrook Veterans' Cemetery

Twenty-two previously unmarked soldiers' graves were official marked at a special ceremony in the Veteran’s Cemetery on Sunday October 31st afternoon.  When Larry Miller of the Cranbrook Legion became aware of these many unmarked graves he set about through an organization known as the Last Post to recognise these fallen soldiers.   Considerable research to confirm names, dates of death and burial into this cemetery was required.  Dave Humphrey undertook this part of the project and was honoured at the ceremony with a special Legion Award of Merit.  The cost of the gravestones was born by the Last Post organisation which is supported by Veteran Affairs Canada.  A considerable crowd came out to witness the placing of wreaths by cadets as each individual soldier’s name was read aloud.  Desiree Lepine who sang beautifully while accompanied by Brad Couttie, provided some lovely music during the ceremony.  Research is ongoing into another eight unmarked graves in the same cemetery.
