TORONTO -- A group of university students will head to Nunavut this summer to build a greenhouse to produce cheaper food for one remote community.
Ryerson University students Stefany Nieto and Ben Canning met two years ago and wanted to tackle an issue affecting Canadians. They are part of Enactus, an international organization that connects students, professors and business experts with the goal of using entrepreneurial action to raise living standards.
They pondered projects that included providing skills to inmates and producing baby warmers for northern families.

With the community on board, the students then had to raise money. The business management students said they managed to raise more than $150,000 through donations from Ryerson, Brookfield Institute and several others, along with a few online funding campaigns.

They are in the process of buying a greenhouse from Growing Spaces, which looks like an igloo made of plastic panels. Technically it's called a geodesic dome, a modular sphere made with triangular polycarbonate panels.
The Colorado-based Growing Spaces says their domes are perfect for harsh climates because they can withstand 200 km/h winds and 250 centimetres of snow.
In early August, Nieto will head up to Nunavut for five weeks while Canning and three other students will join her two weeks later to build the greenhouse along with members of the community.
The dome's parts are scheduled to arrive by ship on Aug. 15. It will take about a week to put together, Nieto said.

Weed Pull Community Forest, June 7th

The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council and the CCFS have organized another weed pull for this June.

Location: we shall marshal at the Sylvan Lakes parking lot at 9:00 am Sunday June 7^th, 2015. This site has the easiest parking and we will split up into car pools from there.  Access from the North Gate by the SE Fire Centre.

Equipment; particpants are to bring gloves, clippers and garden spades or other tools if they are available, (hatchets are useful), people power, and personal water. 

EKCIP will provide garbage bags, some tools, training and an EKIPC representative.

St. Catharines celebrates arts community

The City of St. Catharines recognized outstanding contributions to its arts community Saturday night during the 2015 St. Catharines Arts Awards.

The City of St. Catharines honoured its 2015 Arts Awards recipients during the special event at Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, Centre for the Arts, Brock University. One of the last events at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre, it was a night of fun and inspiring moments as the local arts and culture community took centre stage.

“Congratulations to the 2015 Arts Awards recipients and to all of the nominees,” said Mayor Walter Sendzik. “Tonight we celebrated the very best of our arts community. Many of this year’s nominees have achieved international accolades for their work, but it is always meaningful to be recognized in our hometown. Our artists play an important role in making our community such a great place to live. Congratulations!”

SAANICH, B.C. -- An 11-year old girl's bid to have miniature goats permitted in a Vancouver Island community's backyards appears to be moving forward at the mayor's office.
Jillian McCue of Sannich, B.C., made a presentation to council on Monday night.
She says she will need to present her ideas to three committees.

Mayor Richard Atwell says he would have preferred to bypass that process and have the proposal considered directly by council.
Atwell says he supports Jillian and doesn't think the committee process is necessary.
He says the matter is expected to be back before council before July.
